Daredevil (2014) comic and slight Daredevil (2015) Netflix series spoilers ahead!!
The other day, my partner and I went to the comic store. I ended up picking up issues 9, 10, and 11 of Daredevil (2014), which I've been reading and loving. I especially enjoyed 9 and 10. Issue 8 re-introduced an old villian of Matt's, Zebediah Killgrave, The Purple Man . In this issue, he enlists the help of his children to wreck havoc on San Fransisco (where Matt currently lives). It turns out, his ability to mind control people with his words is amplified in his children who, when they're together, can mind control people with just their thoughts. At the end of issue 9, the children gang up on Matt and sucessfully push him off a bridge and induce a depression...
Issue 10 opens with darkness. Literal solid black panels. He's stuck in it. Immovable. "Depression is a living thing. It exists by feeding on your darkest moods. And it is always hungry... At its worst, you are numb. You are drained. You are immobilized." (And so on).
One of the (million) reasons I love the Daredevil (2015) Netflix series is that we truly see Matt at his lowest. It's gritty and honestly depressing sometimes, but not in an overly-edgy way. And my enjoyment isn't because I'm a sadist who wants my favorite characters to suffer, but because it is so utterly real. Reading the comics has given me even more of an insight into Matt Murdock's brain and that depression we see in the show is starting to come through in the comics and it is beautifully done. I recently purchased a compedium of Frank Miller's Daredevil: Born Again and I'm starting to think I need to read it ASAP!
